BACKGROUND
The L’Arche Association of Edmonton, also known as Shalom Community, was established in 1972, is a member of the federation of L’Arche Communities and is a not-for-profit association. Since 1972 L’Arche Edmonton-Shalom Community has operated in Sherwood Park/Edmonton. We currently have six homes and a day program. Our Community is rich with people from different cultures, faith backgrounds and life experiences, each one bringing unique gifts and which give us strength and diversity. We also have very committed volunteers, friends and long term members.
L'Arche is an international federation of communities that is committed to make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities revealed through mutually transforming relationships. Mutual relationships and trust in God are at the heart of our life together. We recognize the spiritual and religious needs and aspirations of our members while also respecting those who have no spiritual or religious affiliation.
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES
- The Community Leader is responsible for the Community’s growth and development in relation to the Identity and Mission and in fidelity to the Charter of L’Arche.
- ensure that the current Community Mandate is being fulfilled
- foster a climate of faith, unity and open communication
- maintain and foster relationships with government, other social services, donors, professionals and friends
- maintain and foster the relationships with other communities of L’Arche at the region, Zone and International levels
- Lead the executive and administrative functions, including: organization structures, processes, policies, accountability, budgeting and reporting obligations.
SKILLS AND QUALITIES
- Knowledge of L'Arche and its mission.
- Openness to go to an established L’Arche community for a period of time to receive formation and training. (For those candidates who have no experience or no recent experience with L’Arche)
- Commitment to and ability to model and articulate the values, identity and mission, vision, and the spirituality of L’Arche
- Commitment to the integration of people with disabilities within the life of the home, the broader community of L’Arche, their work places, churches, social settings, families, and the general community
- Ability to interact confidently with families of community members, with church congregations, neighbors, professionals, including medical professionals, workshop supervisors, social workers, counselors, merchants, and the broader community
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations
- Ability to work collaboratively with others
- Organizational skills
