“This motion gives Parliament an opportunity to focus on the remaining barriers to access and inclusion,” said Judy Wasylycia-Leis, NDP Critic for Persons with Disabilities. “We won the battle to ratify the UN Convention and now it’s time to get down to the practical measures needed to realize its promise of real equality and self-sufficiency.”
“Social policy remains homeless at the federal level. The Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) seeks new federal tax initiatives to address the disproportionate poverty experienced by Canadians with disabilities as well as actions to increase employment opportunities for
persons with disabilities,” said Marie White, National Chairperson of CCD.
The motion, by New Democrat Social Policy Critic Tony Martin (Sault Ste. Marie), calls for a study on the barriers that impede the quality of life of persons with disabilities, including their participation in the labour market.
“There are more than 4.4 million Canadians with disabilities. Many live in poverty and isolation and they have much to overcome to be economically independent and fully participate in society,” Martin said. “We need this study to be practical, to come up with concrete recommendations the government will implement.”
While Parliament’s HUMA Committee has other business to complete first, MPs hope to hear from a several national disabilities groups next week for suggestions on the parameters of the study. |
