A Human Future : A Second Interview with Pamela Cushing on Altruism

Pam Cushing and Janis at L'Arche Daybreak

Altruism - Part 2

After a first issue on altruism as a measure of the quality of the society itself, Pamela Cushing explores in this second issue the theme of altruism with particular reference to L'Arche as a kind of laboratory for what we might learn about it.

L'Arche is built on the altruism or generosity of the many young volunteers who come as assistants to share life with people with developmental disabilities in its homes and programs. These young people accept a lifestyle that is radically different from their peers who are not in LArche. They comefor a year, or two, and some stay much longer.

What motivates and sustains this kind of generosity?

Comments

I would recommend to everyone working in Human Resources in our communities to read this inspiring article.

Just finished reading A Human Future - on this blustery winter day.
I found it so interesting and also challenging. Pamela, for me, goes right to the core of the questions, and she doesn't offer definitive - cover-all statements. Rather, you know she listens and give people credit for their experience and insight. I thought it was excellent. I liked the students' comments too. Great Job! I hope many people see it.
