Hitchiking or Facebook?
Posted 2008-05-30 10:49:27

Some time ago, about 1985, when L’Arche was half as old as it is now, and when the Internet had barely been born, it wasn’t unusual to “pluck” assistants—literally—from the side of the road.

The scenario was this: Normally, at the end of a day, or on returning from a walk or an errand, we would be driving back to the house. Being good Samaritans, we would stop to pick up one or two young people, hitchhiking and struggling with backpacks, to help them travel the next few kilometres. They sat in the back of the van, where they were in very good company! Once the shock passed, we spent some time telling them about L’Arche.

One thing led to another … we would offer them a place to stay that night, and most of them stayed on for several days, some for several months, even for a year. At the time, there was no Internet; there were no police records checks. Folks played with the carburetors of their cars rather than with the insides of a computer.

In those days, our recruitment methods were somewhat unplanned, even wild. Today, I would like to see if we can attract assistants using Facebook.

So gald to see this discussion. this is the first time Iactually visited the commons.

I started a facebook group for friends of our community last year with the thought of keeping former assistants posted and then haveing them evangelize or recruit through thier networkls. i initially hoped that someone in our ocmmunity would take over the group but noone was interested.

For me it was a learning process. It has yet to become a living group.

Snce then Ihave explored facebook in depth and have enlarged my horizons substantially. This is certainly a platform of th epeople. We have a few core members on Facebook and a lot of new assistants. The older ones have more resistance.

@Amil Zavodivker, Facebook friends does not have to be limited to your only friends. Strangers yesterday are freinds today and always have been. Facebook provides us with the opportunityof reaching likeminded people easily and quickly. It is certainly a great analogy the hitchhiker.

To bad about the privacy issues but it is one of those necessary evil that has come to be in today's society. Pictures and stories are the lifeblood of l'Arche. An efficient manner in obtaining permission certainly needs to be developed probably even in regards to picture taking in general.

Making it accessible and sharing people's gifts here is a little challenge but easily adapted witha few skills and tools. The format is interactive and comes to life because all membes of the group have creative access to what gets posted and shared. It is a great place to exchange stories, ideas and opinions. Itf a group is made and members are kept as active particiapantnts, Facebook groups can actually develop into a virtual community experience that can be followed through the screen into flesh and blood ones.

Very exciting. I think FB is a great Horizon fore core members especially.
